Still appreciate seeing the 1986 (?) Mars needs guitars tour at the Orpheum more than almost any other of the many shows I have seen.... I was also right in the front twenty rows, but in fairness, it was not even close to sold out.... ;)

we are all the same dan... I took a class with samuel delaney, and though I got on very well with him personally (it was a VERY small class, maybe 8 of us?), i didn't retain a bloody thing. Except that I didn't like his writing much.

Wow, that Wolfe article was fantastic. Thanks so much for posting it. I'll be passing it on and re-reading it many a time, I suspect. I am such a HUGE fan of The Lord of the Rings and never tire of discovering new stuff about the books, about Tolkien himself, and even about the films. This was a lovely article, even more so because Wolfe's two book series, The Knight and The Wizard were my introduction to the wonder that is Gene Wolfe.

I am currently reading Fall of Giants by Ken Follet. It is 985 pages and the first book of a three book series (all equally as verbose), but it only took until page 180 or so when someone was getting a hand-job during an opera. So if you're into that sort of thing...

Unfortunately, it didn't mention any of these literary nuances on the back cover notes, just promises of a journey through WWI and the Russian Revolution. There's a world of 12 year-old boys that have no idea what they are missing out on. I, on the other hand, can't believe I spent this much cash on a drawn-out romance novel. I am keeping with it in the event that it gets better. There was a mine pit fire and that was good so I've got that going for me.

I realize that my observations on my reading material are perhaps not as eloquent as yours, but I have little material to work with and I'm half deep into a bottle of mixed grape Bogle that I will grace with a solid 7 in drinkability.

I attempted watching the Muppets version, but gave up on it pretty rapidly, despite the presence of Michael Caine.
