Like rock n’ roll, the popularity of gangster films* has spread far beyond the American culture where they were born. This (mostly) past summer I watched a number of French and Hong Kong films in that genre. In particular I watched a lot of Johnny To films, continuing a process started back in December when Election first arrived courtesy of Netflix.
Three Four Johnny To films I really enjoyed:
1. Exile
2. Election
3. Triad Election
4. Eye In The Sky
Two Johnny To films I’m looking forward to seeing:
*I cast a wide net with the term ‘gangster films’ using it to refer to pretty much any film about criminals, organized or not.
**Starring Johnny Hallyday who starred in the superb The Man on the Train, which I also enjoyed this summer.
