La Vie A Deux

It is now definite: the Intended and I will be spending our honeymoon in Paris. This is no surprise to those of you who know us; we’ve been talking about going for months. But now theory has turned to reality. Plane tickets have been purchased, reservations made at a hotel in the 7th arrondissement and [...]

Moving Pictures

This is likely to be of interest only to locals, but there’s a rumor that the Wolly theatre will be re-opened. Which would, or at least could, be very cool.

And on the same site, I found a like to this brief documentary about the Wollaston and the Coolidge Corner theatres.

Zombie Boy

I do not like ‘party games’ like Scattergories or Taboo. No particular reason, they just rub me the wrong way. However, I would happily make an exception for Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game. Hell, I would probably throw a party to play Last Night on Earth. And if I could find a copy [...]

Pictures In An Exhibition

First up, a cool story about how Library of Congress archivists ‘crowdsourced’ an image of downtown Brockton to obtain more information about the picture.  Apparently, the Library’s flickr set contains all sorts of New England images in need of metadata.

For more photographic goodness, see Google’s collection of pictures from Life magazine, many previously unreleased [...]

Give Me Another Chance

The Intended brought it to my attention that The Littlest Bar is reopening at 102 Broad St (next door to the Times.)

It will be hard to recreate the atmosphere of the original, but hopefully the new establishment will develop a character of its own. Anyway, it’s nice to get a bar back, especially since [...]

Oh, Me

You know what is completely unnecessary? A remake of the Witch Mountain movies. Starring The Rock.  First of all, is it necessary to strip mine every bit of  Generation X’s childhood for today’s ‘entertainment?’

Also, despite my admiration for Kim Richards, the original Witch Mountain films were just not that good.

Looks That Kill

For your movie-choosing convenience – the Ninja Movie Decision Tree. Revenge of the Ninja remains my favorite Golan-Globus movie – high praise indeed when one considers my adolescence was littered with such Golan-Globus gems as Breakin’ and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, Missing in Action, and Hercules.

Talent Show

Peter Gammons. In the way-back times he functioned as a sort of baseball lifeline for me. More recently, his non-covering of baseball’s steroids era disappointed me.

For some reason ESPN has let Gammon’s blog out from behind their subscriber only firewall, which allowed me to go back and read this column and remind myself that [...]

That’s Entertainment

Some day – when I justify the time and money – I will possess myself of a cuecat and a lifetime membership to Librarything and then I’ll happily while away the hours scanning and cataloging all books.

The fact that I look forward to this and consider it delayed gratification probably marks me as slightly [...]

Deja Varoom

So I heard there is concern that teenage boys do not read so much anymore. Is this true? Or am I mistaken? Regardless, here we have a young man telling the publishing industry what teenage guys want to read:

And then there are the vampires and other supernatural creature that appear in many contemporary teen [...]

As A Judgement

I thought this was very cool: the Thomas Crane Library in Quincy makes this list of America’s 10 Coolest Public Libraries. I trust that you all patronize your local library, where ever that may be.

Righteously

Like many of you, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief the day following the election. After all, reason prevailed.

Un Simple Histoire

I voted this morning. Hope you did too, but I’m not going to urge you to vote, as seems popular in blog land today. Frankly, if you need to be urged or prompted to register and then vote you are too fucking lazy and dumb to exercise the franchise.

I watched an elderly lady vote [...]

Thought About You

There was a lot of things to be done this past weekend, and most of them happened, including watching my cousin on Jeopardy Friday night and cooking penne with pumpkin sauce with The Intended. And I made chili. Again. I love you, slow cooker.

While we’re on the subject of food, wouldn’t it be cool [...]
