So I’m listening to a podcast interview with Julie Andrews and I realize I’ve never seen The Sound of Music. My question to you, my half-dozen or so readers, becomes: is this something I should rectify? Or something for which I should be thankful?

I’m not a fan of the movie bt it’s sort of a cultural touchstone. IMO, it’s kinda mandatory that you see it at least once in your life.
How did you ever manage to escape seeing it thusfar?
Oh, certainly. Spend your money on movies containing people singing songs and twirling like the possessed instead of TALKING like normal people.
Be thankful and avoid more musical movies. I know you love Annie, but isn’t that enough for one man?
I’m a straight man who loves musicals so I firmly fall into the camp of seeing this one. It is not my favorite by any means but I liked it. Eidel Weiss (pardon any spelling errors) is just a terrific song/moment in the film.
@Jim
I’m not sure how I escaped. Never seen Titanic either.
@ Heather
It’s not that I ‘love’ Annie – it’s more like it was burned into my brain.
@Carl
I know the song Edel Weiss. I think.
In answer to your original questions–I would say…both? I remember being fascinated with it and negotiating with my parents to stay up and watch it ’til late on TV, as long as I took a nap the next day. Then again, I was 4 at the time. I might just choose to go to bed early these days.
I’m surprised you have escaped this thus far in your life and yes, something you should see once in your life along with–
Wizard of Oz
It’s a Wonderful Life
Gone with the Wind
Roots
There just THOSE movies everyone has seen.
You could skip Titanic I believe. I have it on VHS if you feel the need.
I’ve seen Wizard of Oz and It’s A Wonderful Life and suffered through Gone With The Wind – never seen Roots though.
Do not like not Annie.
I knew it! Ya love it!
Do you not don’t dislike Annie?
for a musical, its not a bad film. its even good. but, should you miss it, you shan’t suffer.
[...] I still have not seen The Sound of Music and I doubt I will anytime soon. But I did uncover a much more interesting (to me anyway) part of the von Trapp family saga. I’m not referring to their return to Austria, but to an older part of the story. George Ritter von Trapp served as a U-boat commander in the Austro-Hungarian navy during the First World War, and later wrote a book, titled To The Last Salute, about his experiences. I have feeling – just feeling mind you – that I’ll read the book before I see the movie. « Makes No Sense At All | [...]
