Let The Music Play
Posted by The Silver Fox under Music, Television
Hi. It’s me again, still with Solid Gold on the brain. Lucky for me, YouTube is there to function as a sort of way back machine. Here’s some samples of the goodness…
Ozzy on Solid Gold. Who knew? I have no recollection of this event.
Ronnie, Bobbie, Ricky and Mike… if I love the girl who cares who you like?
An entire episode condensed into six minutes. Again, note the interpretive dance.
I had completely forgotten about this particular number - not a bad pop song though overshadowed by Scandal’s other stuff.
I include this clip for three reasons:
1. The mandatory 80s uniform and haircuts the band members all sport. We shall not see their like again.
2. The band is soooo synth-pop the guitars are an afterthought. My sixteen year-old, heavy metal self would have officially dubbed this ‘candy ass.’ Today I find it charming in a time capsule sort of way.
3. The giant disembodied heads that lurk about the band as part of the stage set. WTF?
Here we have Molly Hatchet on Solid Gold, which I include as an example of how weirdly inclusive this show was when it come to booking musical guests. I assume this was just a function of there being limited opportunities in that pre-digital age for artists to shill their musical wares.
Speaking of musical diversity, Frank Sinatra also put in appearance on Solid Gold. I have to admit, that kind of blows my mind.
The late great Falco does Vienna Calling…
… and to wrap things up - Ant Music.

That’s some pretty impressive dancing from Adam! And I truly enjoyed Patty’s performance - more than I thought I would in the first minute. I’d love to go to a fancy-dress party with all that blush and eye shadow and hair gel/mousse/spray they used. And the box-shaped tops with a belt over leggings. And pumps.
Oh… sorry.
Thank goodness for the intertubes where we can catch glimpses of our past like that.

Very amusing. Teh Smitten and I loved the Molly Hatchet clip. He said that they had never looked so tidy or lost, and marveled at the diversity of the mullets. I’m thinking it was the first and last time the lead singer had worn a clean button-down shirt on stage.
Also, did anyone else know that Adam Ant was channeling Brando in Mutiny on the Bounty back then? Huh.
And I echo Carmen’s thoughts re Patty Smythe - I loved her look back then.

Heh. Thanks for the Solid Gold. Made me feel like I should be eating Doritos and getting ready to watch the Love Boat. BTW, when my cell phone rings these days, those around me are treated to a little Desperate But Not Serious. Is it wrong to still love Adam Ant?

Solid Gold was a show we all watched - yes. But, we can cherish the momries and take a nice look back at what once was.
Now, about those American Gladiators….what the hell were they thinking bringing that back on? It just ruins the memories.

It is never wrong to love Adam Ant. Or Patty Smythe and her look.
I would rather they brought back Solid Gold than American Gladiators.

I was a regular Solid Gold viewer circa 1980/81. Dionne Warwick! The Solid Gold dancers! I think the first time I heard “Another One Bites the Dust” was when it was performed by the SG dancers. I remember thinking, “oh shit. Queen’s gone disco.”

It seems if you were the right age, Solid Gold left an indelible impression.
