Dyslexic Heart
Posted by The Silver Fox under Movies
The main problem with Fresh Air, is, of course, Terry Gross - I just find her style vaguely irritating. But she has on so many interesting guests it’s difficult to stop listening. For example, I just heard her interview with Brian Cox. Now I wrote some time ago about my ‘discovery’ of Mr. Cox, and since then I’ve enjoyed his work in Deadwood as well as films like Manhunter. So I quite enjoyed hearing him talk of working with John Gielgud and Lawrence Olivier, among other things.

My question to you, my half-dozen or so readers, becomes: is this something I should rectify? Or something for which I should be thankful? « Off The Record | […]

Really? I’ve always sort of liked Terry Gross. And yes, she gets some amazing guests on that show.

Spot on with Terry Gross. The thing that irritates me about her is that in many interviews she often asks just one question too many, so that the thread of the discussion suddenly and tragically devolves into inanity.

My two favorite Terry moments: (1) the time she asked Will Smith if he felt bilingual as a child because, although he used slang with his friends, his grandmother demanded he use proper grammar at home (his answer was something along the lines of “um, no, it was all English”), and (2) the time she told Denis Leary that she was surprised that he has gay friends in real life, since his character on Rescue Me is homophobic.

I always did kind of like T.G., and was kind of like, “hmmm” at your post.
Then I heard her interview Brian Ferry (*sigh*) - and was a bit disappointed with… the inanity.

Yes, the inanity.

The Bill O’Reilly and Gene Simmons interviews are pretty awesome, though.

Yes, the Gene Simmons interview is a classic. Much depends on the guest with her.
