I Confess

I noted with interest this post concerning “songs that I’ve made a happy fool of myself singing along to.” My first impulse was to answer ‘anything from Annie, but technically speaking I don’t sing along to Annie, I sing Annie. Also, I occasionally favor folks with a rendition of Sunrise, Sunset, although that tends to be mercifully brief as the only words I know are ‘sunrise, sunset.’

But I digress. Now then, songs I actually sing along to tend to date back to the 80s, the dawning of my musical awareness and a most excellent decade for pop. A sampling of my favorites would include:

Bad Reputation – Joan Jett
Yes, I Love Rock n’ Roll is an obvious choice, but I assure you Bad Reputation also kicks much ass. And is also better suited for impromptu dancing and rockstar gesturing.

Mary, Mary – Run DMC
Reminds me of my freshman year at college. Though truth to tell King of Rock or Rock Box will do just as well.

Private Idaho – B-52s
As a rule of thumb, you should sing along to any song containing the lyrics ‘like a wild potato.’ And you can dance to it any way you want, but I recommend lots of shambly arm-twirling in a loose-limbed kind of way. Be like Snuffy, except faster.

Party All The Time – Eddie Murphy
I only sing one line along with this song, the line where Rick James, contributing background vocals, comes in with the lyric ‘..diamonds on your finger… .” After that, Mr. James and I are through.

The Rain – Oran ‘Juice’ Jones.
I trust that the joys of this song require no explanation.
