Encyclopaedia Britannica, the grand old man of encyclopedias, has all its content available online… for a fee. But there are some pretty cool features there that are free.
Like the Britannica Blog, where they write about The Quest for the Perfect Pancake. Man, who doesn’t like a) pancakes and b) saying ‘flapjack’ repeatedly?
Now this one is really cool – Britannica Timelines. Check out this interactive timeline of WWII, and then go and create your own.

I always preferred World Book, personally.
I had a set of World Book encyclopedias when I was growing up.
Me, too. From 1987. I still look at them when I visit my parents. And then I end up on the couch with six of them surrounding me, because I get sidetracked and look a bunch of other shit up.
Our set was circa 196o something. And I was born in 1970! So they were a little out of date – but still fun to look at.
